Understand liquid-liquid chromatography easily

RotaChrom's new white paper, "Advanced Chromatography," delves deeper into the intricacies of centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) and liquid liquid chromatography. Building upon the basic concepts outlined in our previous paper, "An Introduction to Chromatography," this new guide aims to make CPC accessible to a wider audience, even those without a background in science or chemistry.

The goal is to make CPC a an easy to understand topic so anyone, even without a degree in science or chemistry, could understand the subject. We divided the topics into specific chapters, each dealing with a few aspects of CPC.

Liquid-liquid chromatography

Liquid liquid chromatography is a combination of liquid liquid separation principles combined with the methodology of chromatography. In this technique, separation occurs between two immiscible liquid phases, as both the mobile and stationary phases are liquids.

In an LLC system separation takes place based on the differing partitioning behavior of the solutes between the two phases. Since LLC uses a liquid stationary phase, the technique offers many advantages over traditional liquid-solid chromatographic separation techniques, and can easily be scaled up to preparative liquid chromatography.

Advantages of LLC

Advantages of liquid liquid chromatography include:

  • No need for silica gel, which cuts the cost of consumables and removes a polluting and expensive material from the process
  • Silica degradation is not an issue
  • No need for silica regeneration cycle or replacement
  • High sample loading capacity
  • The possibility of lossless sample recovery
  • Separation of any compound that is soluble in a liquid phase
  • Quick and simple method development, with predictable outcomes
