Centrifugal partition chromatography cell design, explained

‘Advanced Chromatography’ is RotaChrom’s series exploring the more in-depth aspects of centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC). It builds upon the foundations in 'An Introduction to Chromatography', but focuses more on CPC and liquid liquid chromatography.

The goal is to make CPC a an easy to understand topic, so anyone, even without a degree in science or chemistry could understand the subject. We divided the bigger topics into specific chapters, each dealing with a few aspects of CPC.

Chromatography without a column

A major difference between preparative high performance liquid chromatography and CPC is the column - or rather the absence of a classic column in CPC. To examine CPC’s cell design, we will explore how RotaChrom Technologies uses its CPC cell and what advantages it has over traditional chromatographic solutions.

The column in a RotaChrom CPC machine is the rotor and the interconnected cells. This is the feature which allows the mahchine to operate in two modes: ascending and descending. This is because a liquid mobile phase can be denser or less dense depending on the separation.

The mobile phase’s density is of course in comparison to the density of the immobilized stationary phase. This means that the mobile phase must be denser or less dense than the stationary phase.

Advantages of CPC cells

RotaChrom’s CPC design takes advantage of the space provided by cylindrical chambers. Large bore cylinders are easy to manufacture and provide linear scalability thanks to their unique, patented dimensions and architecture.

This unique cell design lets you scale your purification from research to industry. The individual extractions cells are designed in a way that the performance is not impacted, allowing our extraction cells to be scaled from 10 to 100 millimeters without impacting performance and providing flow increases from milliliters per minute to hundreds of milliliters per minute.

Select the perfect device for lab-scale, pilot-scale or industrial-scale purification, and linear scale-up your production from mg to kg/day.
